Why go to school if you could hang with friends at the mall? Or soak up the sun on a Caribbean beach? Or relax inside of your own, confined room with a good book or a captivating tv show?
Why leave your perfect summer life to sit in an uncomfortable desk for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 10 months a year?
Here's a list of the five things I told myself this morning to get me out of bed and into a desk for the first day of school.

1. Friendships

Pretty much everyone has at least one close friend from school, giving them all the more reason to go back to school. Maybe you haven't seen that friend all summer, and the first day of school is more of a reunion. The friendships you make at school most likely give you a push to go back to school every day. I mean, why else would there be a break in between each class?:D In those few minutes, you talk with your friends, filling each other in on all the latest gossip and eventually walk each other to the next class.
Another positive of school friendships is it gives you an excuse to see each other all the time. Not only can you hang out after school hours, but you also have all day together during the week. How awesome is that? Think of school as a place to hang with the best of the best, because a school with no friends truly would be torture. ;)
2. Fun
I know, I know. How is school fun? Well, sometimes it's not, with homework, detention and all, but admit it, there will always be a relatively enjoyable assignment or two and the occasional laugh.
There's always that one teacher who, you know, gets it. Or a project that you find more interesting than others. (If you are a hockey player, an S.A. on the history of hockey etc.) Plus, you usually have fun talking with your friends during lunch, and breaks.Through everything down, there is an upside. Even in school.
3. Building A Future
Although trigonometry may not help you in life, school teaches every student many tips, tricks, and info that will make your life out of school so, so much easier.

To break it down, in order to support yourself in our world, you need money. Money comes from a job, the better the job the better the income, but how do you get hired for a good job? The answer is your education.
Elementary and Jr. High are just introductions to career basics. As a student later progresses through high school, the concept of a future profession becomes more of your main focus. After high school, you either graduate from school officially or go to a university or college where you take multiple courses based on how you want to spend your future.
The time spent in school varies throughout every student, but without an education to back them up, life in the real world can, and will, be hard.
4. Helps Build Confidence and Self-Respect
Not everyone has the courage to get on stage and share their opinion with an audience or crowd, or the self-respect to encourage themselves and be proud of what they can do.
Schools offer programs to raise self-confidence and most classes often bring out what you can really do, maybe even parts of you that you didn't know even existed. School can bring out the best in you. (and in some situations the worst. we've all been there ;p )
Schools also provide counselors and wiser adults and professionals to help your work through problems you may not be comfortable with talking about in your home, resulting in a burden being lifted off your shoulders and allowing you to live life more freely and assured.
5. Street Smarts
Finally, school gives you some street smarts. For example, school exposes you to other races, cultures, religions, etc. and educates you in delicacies other than your own. Schools are where you meet new people, develop relationships, and learn how to treat and deal with others. It often provides you with basic/advanced manner training, and almost always different languages and cultural classes.
School also educates you in wiser health decisions and rituals as well as exposes you to the dangers and perils of the real world.
School may seem stupid and irrelevant but it is pretty much the exact opposite.
Trust me. School can be boring at times, I know from personal experience. But always remember the upsides of school, and how much fun it can actually be.
May this everyday blog written by an everyday teenager make your day one in a million.
